Exploring Community Dance: A Conference - September 26 to September 27

Exploring Community Dance: A Conference will be held in Minneapolis on Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27. We will be having presenters from the Twin Cities and also from Korea.

Community dance is an inclusive, participatory form of dance that emphasizes creativity, social harmony, and accessibility for all people, regardless of age, ability, or background. Led by professionals, it focuses on the experience of dancing together rather than technical precision, fostering community bonding and personal growth.

Our conference is aimed at raising awareness about the whole concept of “Community Dance”. We have invited special individuals from the cities, because they represent a specific form of community dance. Future image featured image Christ.

Of the many flavors of community dance, we are choosing to focus on several distinct yet interconnected forms. These include using dance in therapeutic and community settings, drawing on emergent material from participants to promote healing, build group cohesion, and create moments of synchrony. Community dance can also harness the power of performance to foster a sense of belonging, not only among audience members but among the performers themselves. Through structured improvisation, dance becomes accessible and beneficial for specific populations, such as medical professionals, while also supporting personal growth and strengthening communal bonds. Beyond the interpersonal, dance offers a way to attune to the Sacred and to connect with and honor the environment. Finally, it can serve as a means of portraying and celebrating the culture of one’s own community, raising awareness and deepening cultural understanding.
